Accessibility statement
Last updated: October 5, 2026
We want everyone to be able to use billycalc, including people who rely on a keyboard, a screen reader or zoom. Below is what already works, what does not yet, and how to report a problem.
1. Our goal and current status
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. The website does not yet fully meet them; the known limitations are listed in section 4. No independent accessibility audit has been carried out.
2. How we checked
This statement is based on a self-assessment carried out on October 5, 2026: a review of the code and automated checks in the Chromium browser (accessibility tree, keyboard navigation, colour contrast, screen widths from 320 to 1280 px). We checked the home pages, the catalog, the loan, mortgage, BMI and other calculators, converters, the contact and privacy pages and an embedded widget, plus the language of 60 random calculator pages. We have not yet tested with real screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack), in Windows high-contrast mode or with speech input.
3. What works
- Every language version declares the correct page language, which helps screen readers choose the right pronunciation.
- The first Tab stop is a "Skip to content" link that becomes visible on focus. Every page we checked has one header, main area and footer, a single top-level heading and a descriptive page title; breadcrumbs are marked up as navigation.
- Keyboard focus is clearly visible: a 2 px outline in the brand colour, 8.4:1 contrast.
- All controls are standard links, buttons and form fields that work with a keyboard. Sliders move with the arrow keys, and FAQ answers open with Enter.
- The cookie banner is reachable right after the skip link, "Accept" and "Reject" are equal buttons, and "Cookie settings" in the footer reopens it and moves focus to it. Even at 320 px wide, the banner does not cover the focused element.
- The number fields of our formula calculators (all calculators in Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian and Indonesian, and most in English and Russian) and the amount and interest-rate fields of the loan and mortgage calculators have accessible names that match their visible labels.
- In the contact form, every field has a label, and success and error messages are announced to screen readers. There is no time limit and no CAPTCHA.
- Body text has 16.1:1 contrast, links in text 8.4:1 and buttons 8.8:1.
- The "reduce motion" setting turns off animations. Pinch-zoom is not disabled.
- The logo and decorative icons are hidden from screen readers, and the payment chart has a text legend with the same figures. There is no audio, video, autoplay, time limit or PDF on the website.
4. Known limitations
- Sliders have no name. A screen reader will announce only "slider, 170" without saying what it controls. On the BMI and other health calculators and on some converters the slider is the only input, so the value cannot be typed.
- Older calculators (about a third of the Russian pages and about 100 English pages): labels are not linked to their fields, so fields are announced without a name.
- Results are not announced automatically; you need to move to the result yourself after each change.
- The selected option in toggle buttons (annuity or differentiated payments, term presets, categories, modes, converter direction) is shown only visually.
- The header search is in Russian on every language version and covers only about 70 Russian pages. The search dialog has no accessible name, Tab can leave it, focus is lost after Esc, and the arrow keys do not move through results.
- The language switcher has no arrow-key support, focus may be lost after Esc, and language names are not marked with their language.
- Mixed languages: the footer line "© 2026 billycalc · Made with a compass" is in English on every version, and on widget pages the declared page language switches to Russian once scripts run.
- Low contrast in some secondary text: field labels, units, breadcrumb links and footer column titles (about 3:1), the current page in the breadcrumbs (1.8:1), amber values such as "Overpayment" (2.5:1) and the contact form messages (3.7–3.9:1). Field borders and the slider track are very light.
- Horizontal scrolling at 320 px (equivalent to 400% zoom) on some of the pages we checked: a formula calculator, the mortgage calculator, the catalog and the Russian loan calculator (which also overflows at 360–375 px).
- On small screens (up to 768 px) the header links are hidden and there is no menu button; navigation relies on breadcrumbs, the footer and search.
- Number fields in formula calculators apply their minimum and maximum while you type: clearing a field with a minimum of 1 inserts "1", so typing "4" gives "14". Select the whole value and type over it instead.
- Structure: heading levels skip on calculator pages, the header navigation has no label, and footer column titles are not marked up as headings.
- Embedded widgets on other websites have the same slider and result limitations.
Reports from visitors help us decide what to fix first.
