Enter your section scores and see the composite exactly as ACT rounds it, in both the enhanced format introduced in 2025 and the classic four-test version, along with the STEM score.

How the calculation works

Every ACT section is reported on a 1–36 scale. The composite is the average of the section scale scores rounded to the nearest whole number, with fractions of one-half or more rounded up. The calculator expects scale scores from your score report, not raw counts of correct answers.

Since 2025 the enhanced ACT makes Science optional, and the composite is based on English, Math and Reading only. The “new format” switch (1 = yes) chooses between (E + M + R) / 3 and the classic (E + M + R + S) / 4. Your Science score still counts in the classic formula and in the STEM score.

Below the composite you see the unrounded average, which tells you how close you are to the next point, and the STEM score: the average of Math and Science with the same rounding rule. The optional Writing test is scored separately on a 2–12 scale and never enters the composite.

Worked example

With the defaults English 25, Math 24, Reading 26 and Science 23, the enhanced format gives (25 + 24 + 26) / 3 = 25.00, a composite of 25. The classic format gives (25 + 24 + 26 + 23) / 4 = 24.5, which rounds up to 25. STEM: (24 + 23) / 2 = 23.5, which rounds to 24.

Things to keep in mind

  • To estimate a superscore, enter your best score in each section across all test dates; many colleges accept superscores.
  • Raw-to-scale conversion varies by test form, so a practice-test raw score translates to a different scale score depending on the edition.
  • If you target engineering or science programs, take Science anyway: the STEM score needs it and some programs look at it.
  • Admissions policies, including test-optional rules, change from year to year. Check each college's current requirements and middle-50% ranges.

What it calculates

The “ACT Score” calculator computes ACT compos. from 5 parameters: english, math, reading, science, new format since 2025, without science (1 = yes).

A study aid and exam-prep helper.

Example calculation

With parameters English = 25, Math = 24, Reading = 26, Science = 23, New format since 2025, without Science (1 = yes) = 1 the result is 25.

How to use

FAQ

How does ACT round the composite?
To the nearest whole number, with .5 rounding up. An average of 24.5 becomes 25; 24.25 becomes 24.
Is Science still part of the ACT?
On the enhanced ACT it is optional and excluded from the composite. It is still needed for the STEM score.
Does the essay affect my composite?
No. Writing is reported separately on a 2–12 scale.
What is a good ACT score?
It depends on your target schools. Compare your composite with the middle-50% range of admitted students published by each college.
