What it calculates

The “Caprini Score (VTE)” calculator computes Caprini score in points from 15 parameters: age (years), surgery (0 none, 1 minor, 2 major > 45 min or laparoscopy/arthroscopy, 3 lower-limb joint arthroplasty), bmi > 25 (1 = yes), other 1-point factors (leg swelling, varicose veins, pregnancy or delivery < 1 mo, hormonal contraceptives/hrt, sepsis, serious lung disease, mi, heart failure, ibd, bed rest in a medical patient), malignancy (1 = yes), bed rest > 72 h (1 = yes), immobilizing plaster cast (1 = yes), central venous catheter (1 = yes), history of vte (1 = yes), family history of vte (1 = yes), number of thrombophilias (factor v leiden, prothrombin 20210a, lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin antibodies, hyperhomocysteinemia, hit, other) — 3 points each, hip, pelvis or leg fracture (1 = yes), multiple trauma < 1 month (1 = yes), stroke < 1 month (1 = yes), acute spinal cord injury < 1 month (1 = yes).

Used by professionals and patients to assess health metrics, dosages, and risks.

Example calculation

With parameters Age = 55 years, Surgery (0 none, 1 minor, 2 major > 45 min or laparoscopy/arthroscopy, 3 lower-limb joint arthroplasty) = 2, BMI > 25 (1 = yes) = 1, Other 1-point factors (leg swelling, varicose veins, pregnancy or delivery < 1 mo, hormonal contraceptives/HRT, sepsis, serious lung disease, MI, heart failure, IBD, bed rest in a medical patient) = 0, Malignancy (1 = yes) = 0, Bed rest > 72 h (1 = yes) = 0, Immobilizing plaster cast (1 = yes) = 0, Central venous catheter (1 = yes) = 0, History of VTE (1 = yes) = 0, Family history of VTE (1 = yes) = 0, Number of thrombophilias (factor V Leiden, prothrombin 20210A, lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin antibodies, hyperhomocysteinemia, HIT, other) — 3 points each = 0, Hip, pelvis or leg fracture (1 = yes) = 0, Multiple trauma < 1 month (1 = yes) = 0, Stroke < 1 month (1 = yes) = 0, Acute spinal cord injury < 1 month (1 = yes) = 0 the result is 4 points (For surgical patients; prophylaxis is decided by a physician).

How to use

  1. Enter age, surgery (0 none, 1 minor, 2 major > 45 min or laparoscopy/arthroscopy, 3 lower-limb joint arthroplasty), bmi > 25 (1 = yes), other 1-point factors (leg swelling, varicose veins, pregnancy or delivery < 1 mo, hormonal contraceptives/hrt, sepsis, serious lung disease, mi, heart failure, ibd, bed rest in a medical patient), malignancy (1 = yes), bed rest > 72 h (1 = yes), immobilizing plaster cast (1 = yes), central venous catheter (1 = yes), history of vte (1 = yes), family history of vte (1 = yes), number of thrombophilias (factor v leiden, prothrombin 20210a, lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin antibodies, hyperhomocysteinemia, hit, other) — 3 points each, hip, pelvis or leg fracture (1 = yes), multiple trauma < 1 month (1 = yes), stroke < 1 month (1 = yes) and acute spinal cord injury < 1 month (1 = yes) — each field above is adjustable with a slider.

FAQ

How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)². Example: 70 kg / (1.75 m)² = 22.9. The WHO normal range is 18.5–24.9; below that is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30+ is obese.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes may show a high BMI with low body fat. It is also less reliable for teenagers, pregnant people, older adults, and very tall or short individuals.
What are the BMI categories?
Underweight: below 18.5. Normal: 18.5–24.9. Overweight: 25–29.9. Obese class I: 30–34.9; class II: 35–39.9; class III: 40+.
What is a better measure than BMI?
Body fat percentage, waist-to-height ratio (aim for under 0.5), and waist circumference give a clearer picture of health than BMI alone.
