Finnegan Score (NAS)

Finnegan Score (NAS): calculated with the published clinical method, with result interpretation. A reference tool that does not replace a doctor's advice.

ℹ Reference calculation based on the published method. It does not replace a clinical examination or a doctor's decision.

What it calculates

The “Finnegan Score (NAS)” calculator computes Finnegan score from 21 parameters: high-pitched cry (0 = no, 1 = excessive, 2 = continuous), sleep after feeding (0 = ≥ 3 h, 1 = < 3 h, 2 = < 2 h, 3 = < 1 h), moro reflex (0 = normal, 1 = hyperactive, 2 = markedly hyperactive), tremors when disturbed (0 = none, 1 = mild, 2 = moderate/severe), tremors when undisturbed (0 = none, 1 = mild, 2 = moderate/severe), increased muscle tone (1 = yes), skin excoriation (1 = yes), myoclonic jerks (1 = yes), generalised convulsions (1 = yes), sweating (1 = yes), temperature (0 = < 37.2 °c, 1 = 37.2–38.2 °c, 2 = > 38.2 °c), frequent yawning (1 = yes), mottling (1 = yes), nasal stuffiness (1 = yes), sneezing (1 = yes), nasal flaring (1 = yes), breathing (0 = normal, 1 = > 60/min, 2 = > 60/min with retractions), excessive sucking (1 = yes), poor feeding (1 = yes), regurgitation (0 = no, 1 = regurgitation, 2 = projectile vomiting), stools (0 = normal, 1 = loose, 2 = watery).

Used by professionals and patients to assess health metrics, dosages, and risks.

Example calculation

With parameters High-pitched cry (0 = no, 1 = excessive, 2 = continuous) = 1, Sleep after feeding (0 = ≥ 3 h, 1 = < 3 h, 2 = < 2 h, 3 = < 1 h) = 2, Moro reflex (0 = normal, 1 = hyperactive, 2 = markedly hyperactive) = 0, Tremors when disturbed (0 = none, 1 = mild, 2 = moderate/severe) = 1, Tremors when undisturbed (0 = none, 1 = mild, 2 = moderate/severe) = 0, Increased muscle tone (1 = yes) = 0, Skin excoriation (1 = yes) = 0, Myoclonic jerks (1 = yes) = 0, Generalised convulsions (1 = yes) = 0, Sweating (1 = yes) = 1, Temperature (0 = < 37.2 °C, 1 = 37.2–38.2 °C, 2 = > 38.2 °C) = 0, Frequent yawning (1 = yes) = 0, Mottling (1 = yes) = 0, Nasal stuffiness (1 = yes) = 0, Sneezing (1 = yes) = 1, Nasal flaring (1 = yes) = 0, Breathing (0 = normal, 1 = > 60/min, 2 = > 60/min with retractions) = 0, Excessive sucking (1 = yes) = 0, Poor feeding (1 = yes) = 0, Regurgitation (0 = no, 1 = regurgitation, 2 = projectile vomiting) = 0, Stools (0 = normal, 1 = loose, 2 = watery) = 1 the result is 9 (3 consecutive scores ≥ 8 or 2 consecutive ≥ 12 indicate drug treatment).

FAQ

How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)². Example: 70 kg / (1.75 m)² = 22.9. The WHO normal range is 18.5–24.9; below that is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30+ is obese.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes may show a high BMI with low body fat. It is also less reliable for teenagers, pregnant people, older adults, and very tall or short individuals.
What are the BMI categories?
Underweight: below 18.5. Normal: 18.5–24.9. Overweight: 25–29.9. Obese class I: 30–34.9; class II: 35–39.9; class III: 40+.
What is a better measure than BMI?
Body fat percentage, waist-to-height ratio (aim for under 0.5), and waist circumference give a clearer picture of health than BMI alone.
