What it calculates

The “Elixhauser Comorbidity” calculator computes Elixhauser index (van Walraven) from 21 parameters: congestive heart failure (+7) (1 = yes), cardiac arrhythmias (+5) (1 = yes), valvular disease (−1) (1 = yes), pulmonary circulation disorders (+4) (1 = yes), peripheral vascular disorders (+2) (1 = yes), paralysis (+7) (1 = yes), other neurological disorders (+6) (1 = yes), chronic pulmonary disease (+3) (1 = yes), renal failure (+5) (1 = yes), liver disease (+11) (1 = yes), lymphoma (+9) (1 = yes), metastatic cancer (+12) (1 = yes), solid tumor without metastasis (+4) (1 = yes), coagulopathy (+3) (1 = yes), obesity (−4) (1 = yes), weight loss (+6) (1 = yes), fluid and electrolyte disorders (+5) (1 = yes), blood loss anemia (−2) (1 = yes), deficiency anemia (−2) (1 = yes), drug abuse (−7) (1 = yes), depression (−3) (1 = yes).

Used by professionals and patients to assess health metrics, dosages, and risks.

Example calculation

With parameters Congestive heart failure (+7) (1 = yes) = 0, Cardiac arrhythmias (+5) (1 = yes) = 0, Valvular disease (−1) (1 = yes) = 0, Pulmonary circulation disorders (+4) (1 = yes) = 0, Peripheral vascular disorders (+2) (1 = yes) = 0, Paralysis (+7) (1 = yes) = 0, Other neurological disorders (+6) (1 = yes) = 0, Chronic pulmonary disease (+3) (1 = yes) = 0, Renal failure (+5) (1 = yes) = 0, Liver disease (+11) (1 = yes) = 0, Lymphoma (+9) (1 = yes) = 0, Metastatic cancer (+12) (1 = yes) = 0, Solid tumor without metastasis (+4) (1 = yes) = 0, Coagulopathy (+3) (1 = yes) = 0, Obesity (−4) (1 = yes) = 0, Weight loss (+6) (1 = yes) = 0, Fluid and electrolyte disorders (+5) (1 = yes) = 0, Blood loss anemia (−2) (1 = yes) = 0, Deficiency anemia (−2) (1 = yes) = 0, Drug abuse (−7) (1 = yes) = 0, Depression (−3) (1 = yes) = 0 the result is 0 (Conditions weighted 0 do not affect the index: hypertension, diabetes, hypothyroidism, peptic ulcer, AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis, alcohol abuse, psychoses).

FAQ

How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)². Example: 70 kg / (1.75 m)² = 22.9. The WHO normal range is 18.5–24.9; below that is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30+ is obese.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes may show a high BMI with low body fat. It is also less reliable for teenagers, pregnant people, older adults, and very tall or short individuals.
What are the BMI categories?
Underweight: below 18.5. Normal: 18.5–24.9. Overweight: 25–29.9. Obese class I: 30–34.9; class II: 35–39.9; class III: 40+.
What is a better measure than BMI?
Body fat percentage, waist-to-height ratio (aim for under 0.5), and waist circumference give a clearer picture of health than BMI alone.
